Thomas Frederick York, 77, of Oxford, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 12, 2021, surrounded by his family.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, August 16th at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield. Visitation will be held from 2-4 P.M. Sunday, August 15 at the Oxford Funeral Service chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to MCC Food Pantry of Wichita. Tom was born on December 5, 1943 in Topeka, KS to parents Dudley Montillon and Gladys Faye (Smith) York. He graduated from St. George, KS High School in 1961 and then attended Kansas State University Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) before being called to active duty, after which he served as an Air Evacuation Medic in Vietnam. Tom later joined the 635th Armored Division of the Kansas Army National Guard in Fort Riley, after having received his Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences from KSU. He continued with Graduate studies in life sciences.
Tom was a GM mechanic for over 25 years but worked many other jobs. He grew up farming, worked in salvage yards, gas stations, truck stops, and drove a bread truck. Tom worked in Pittsburg, KS at National Mills, Miller's Professional Imaging, and retired from Pitt Plastics in 2004 before relocating to the Wichita area.
He was a member of the American Legion in Grove, Oklahoma and volunteered regularly at the MCC Food Pantry in Wichita. Tom enjoyed bird watching, fishing, and listening to bluegrass music. He was a talented sketch artist and played banjo and guitar. Tom enjoyed being Santa at Dillon's each Christmas.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, son Michael Timothy York and granddaughter Kathryn York, as well as his brothers Bill and Doug York.
He is survived by his life partner Sandra Kirk of the home, and his brother Dwight York of Wamego; his sons Winchester York, Jonathon York, Scott York, and Bobbi Green; his daughter Donna Floding; and grandchildren Sarah, Caleb, Malachi, Joshua, Jonathon, Drew, Shane, Desiree, and Tyler.
