Thomas Joseph Sanko, 88, of Oxford, KS passed away Sunday, August 15, 2021 at Oxford Medicalodge.
The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 19 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford. Visitation will be from 4-6 P.M. Wednesday, August 18 at the Oxford Funeral Service Chapel. Private interment will take place at the Oxford Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Friendship Meals and the First Responders of Oxford, donations may be left in the care of the Oxford Funeral Service – PO Box 123 Oxford, KS 67119.
Thomas was born July 25, 1933 in Englewood, CA the son of James and Anna Marie (Desalvo) Sanko. He grew up in California and graduated from high school in 1951. He was united in marriage to Mary Haskins in San Diego, CA on December 12, 1964. Thomas was a proud military career man, he joined the Navy after high school and served in many capacities, including serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a naval hospital corpsman and was in care of casualties, he worked at several naval hospitals and naval stations and on the USS Noble Ship PA218 and USS BenewahAPB35. Thomas’ navy career took him all over the states, including to Barstow, CA; Portsmouth, VA; Camp Le June, NC; and Key West, FL. He retired in 1971. Thomas was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, he enjoyed volunteering as a server for Oxford Friendship Meals, he liked playing solitaire on his computer, and doing puzzles and crosswords. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family.
Survivors include his wife Mary Sanko of the home, children: Edward Sanko of San Diego, CA; Michael Sanko of San Diego, CA; and Kathleen Schearing (Michael) of San Diego, CA; granddaughter Arabella Sanko; and sister Carol Robinson of Lancaster, CA. He is preceded in death by his parents, son Robert Sanko, and brothers Robert and Ronald Sanko.
