Steve was born August 8, 1945 in Winfield, KS to parents Ralph and Betty (Wright) Smith. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1963, attended junior college for a year, then went on to graduate from the University of Kansas with his degree in Architectural Design. Steve was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marianne Rogers at the Arkansas City United Methodist Church in 1967. He also served in the Oklahoma National Guard Thunderbird Unit for several years. Steve was a hard worker and spent 47 years alternately working, managing, and co-owning Elevator Solutions International at Strother Field, also known as Western Manufacturing, Montgomery Elevator, Columbia Elevators, and Wittur.  During that time he helped write elevator safety code for over 17 years. He was a car enthusiast, especially loving antique cars, and was a founding member of the Cherokee Strip Antique Car Club. His favorites were his ’36 Buick Business Coupe, 1914 Ford Model T and ’55 Thunderbird. Steve enjoyed being busy and doing all sorts of different remodel and design projects. Steve was very fond of his dogs, spending time at the lake, and especially time with his friends and family. Some of his favorite sayings were "Not on my watch!" and that "Anything worth doing, is worth doing right".

Steve is preceded in death by his parents and uncles. Survivors include his wife Marianne of Arkansas City, and daughter Shelena Hall and husband Jeff of Frisco, TX.
