Melvin Flottman Obituary

Melvin Ben Flottman, 81, passed away peacefully in his sleep in Rock Rapids, IA September 10, 2022 where he was undergoing physical therapy.

Ben was born August 5, 1941 in Winfield, KS to Robert and Norma Flottman. Ben graduated from high school and entered the Navy before returning to Winfield to start working for a branch of John Morrell CO. In Arkansas City, KS. He married Charlotte Sage in 1968 before moving on to Emporia, KS to finish college. He attended Jr. college in Arkansas City, KS, and then went on to graduate at Emporia State University. From there he went on to move to Memphis, Tennessee once again working for John Morrell Co. as a purchasing agent before moving to Sioux Falls, SD as the Purchasing Manager retiring in 2002 after working for JM a total of 36 yrs. Ben started the first Purchasing Manager group in SD and held positions in the Purchasing Manager Association over the years. Became a certified Purchasing Manager in 1991. He also was co-owner of the family business, the Dawson Monument Co. in Winfield plus two other locations. Ben was a good friend and mentor to many friends. He enjoyed other sports but he was mostly an enthusiastic, avid golfer enjoying many golf trips around the US always trying for a second hole-in-one! He was also a member of the EUB church in Winfield.

Ben is survived by his wife of 54 years, Charlotte, nephew Rex and Sandy Flottman, their daughters Sheridan, and Sierra, brother-in-law Larry Sage and his children Jason and Kimberly, his aunt Ruth O’Connor, good friends who are like family Phil & Carole Priest and Salty his special pup. He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother Robert L Flottman, sister-in-law Christine Flottman, father and mother-in-law, Charles and Louise Sage, and daughter Marla Ann Flottman

Ben will rest in the family plot in Highland Cemetery beside his daughter, Marla. There will be no services per his request. Memorials suggestions Ben would make are to Dakota Dauschund Rescue (rescues & adopts out other breeds too) and The First Tee of SD (for kids learning to golf.)
