Marshall L. Detter, 88, of Winfield, KS passed away at his home on Friday, January 8, 2021 surrounded by his family.
Marshall was born on October 21, 1932 in Hutchinson, KS to Harry E. and Iva Mildred (Marshall) Detter, he attended grade school in Sterling, KS to the 4th grade then Haven, KS to the 8th. His family moved to Winfield in 1945 and he graduated from Winfield High School in 1950. He received a degree in business and education from Southwestern College in 1954. He taught commercial classes at Inman High School from 1954 to 1961. While at Inman, he met and married Diane K. Steierl on May 15, 1955 in Sterling, KS. They had two children, Brad and Kimberly.
After leaving teaching he worked for the Caroon and Reynolds Insurance Co. in Oklahoma for a short period of time, then moved back to Winfield and worked for Jarvis Auto Supply Co., and First Community Federal before retiring in 1994. For the next 15 years he worked part time for Quail Ridge Golf Course and Merle Snider Motors. Marshall enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing golf, and was an avid sports fan, especially football.
He is survived by his wife Diane, his son Brad Detter (Barbara), daughter Kimberly Reynolds (Tom), grandchildren: Jennifer Heim, Michelle Lockman, Ashley Detter-Beck, Luke McCune and Sean McCune, 7 great-grandchildren, and sisters Carol Falen and Janice Flick (Larry).
Memorial services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, contributions may be left in care of Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield.
