Mark Thomas Obituary

Mark Yaeger Thomas, 68, of Winfield, KS, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita due to a pulmonary embolism.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday, August 5 at the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield. Private interment will take place at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 P.M. Tuesday, August 4 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions for Mark may be made to the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary, contributions may be left in care of the funeral home. The family asks that attendees please wear a mask, a recording of the funeral will be available for those unable to attend at www.shelleyfamilyfh.com.

Mark was born March 20, 1952 in Winfield to parents Walter “Yaeger” and Genevieve (Burt) Thomas. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1970, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwestern College and later a Bachelor of Science - Physician Assistant from Wichita State University. Mark was united in marriage to Laura Butterfield from 1978-1992, he later married Karen Hill in 1993 the couple divorced in 2012. Mark worked for the family owned business, Coca-Cola Bottling of Winfield, until the early 90’s. He became a Paramedic through the 1st class offered by Cowley County Community College and served as a first responder and Physicians’ Assistant at multiple locations throughout the county including Winfield Area EMS, Winfield Medical Arts, William Newton Hospital, and South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Mark had many interests, including photography, sketching, reading about history, collecting coins, collecting guns, the medical field, listening to the Beatles and Paul Harvey. He was also a safety officer and taught rapid response classes at McConnell AFB, and was also a member of the NRA, First United Methodist Church and on the Board of Directors at William Newton Hospital. More than anything Mark loved his family and spending time with his grandkids.

Survivors include children: Bryant Thomas and wife Vanessa, Eryn Clark and husband LJ, and Alex Thomas and wife Jade; step-children: Jessica Bryson, Amber Kirk, and Jordan Sisson; grandchildren: Maleyah, Isaak, Aydah, Alivia, Aceyn, Ethan, Carson, one on the way and 8 additional grandchildren; siblings: Matt Thomas and wife Gwen, and Theresa McCoy; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Michael and Dan Thomas.
