Margaret was born on September 14, 1938, in rural Perry, OK to parents Clarence and Margaret (Durkee) Kukuk.  She was washed in the waters of Holy Baptism and brought into the family of God at Christ Lutheran Church, Perry, OK, on October 2, 1938, and she confirmed her baptismal vows at Christ Lutheran Church on May 18, 1952.  Margaret attended elementary school at Lone Star School, a one-room rural school across the road from her home, then she attended Hayward High School in the former town of Hayward, OK.  In her sophomore year Margaret was diagnosed with Rheumatic Fever and she spent the next two years at home in bed, following the medical protocol at that time.  The high school principal brought lessons to her home so she could continue her education and not fall behind.  Her doctors warned that she would probably not live to adulthood as her heart was severely damaged, but through her faith in the Lord, she proved them wrong.  Margaret graduated with her Hayward classmates in 1956.  She then attended Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa, OK, where she met Monty Schmitz, and they were married on February 14, 1960.  She worked in the banking industry for most of her life, working at several different banks as a proofing machine operator and a teller.  She also briefly worked at a government nuclear facility in the Texas panhandle, and for the Oxford Funeral Service.  Margaret was an avid reader; she especially enjoyed reading religious novels and faithfully read her Bible every day.  Margaret was also on the Oxford school board and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield.

Margaret had the unique ability to brighten up any room with her welcoming smile; she exuded joy wherever she went.  Her greeting to most people was “Hi, Ladybug!” and conversations usually ended with “Jesus loves you and so do I!”  When faced with a difficulty, her response was always “but that’s OK.”  She always relied on her Lord in difficult times, and He never disappointed her.

Surviving to honor Margaret’s memory are her sons Dr. Tony Schmitz and wife Christine of Knoxville, TN, and Jonathan Schmitz of Oxford, KS; grandchildren Jake Schmitz and Barbara Schmitz; siblings: Louise Holt of Tioga, ND, Richard Kukuk and wife Donna of Perry, OK, Fred Kukuk and wife Saundra of Stillwater, OK, and Steve Kukuk and wife Debora of Edmond, OK. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Monty, and brother David Kukuk.
