Janeene “Jan” Spangler, 84, of Arkansas City, Kansas, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2022, at Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City, Kansas.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 P.M. Monday, November 28th,2022 at the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Arkansas City. A time of visitation has been scheduled for Sunday, November 27th, 2022 from 4-6 P.M. at the funeral home.
Jan was born the daughter of Mervin and Florence (Deming) Siner in Arkansas City, Kansas on April 25, 1938. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1956 and attended one semester of nursing school at Hutchinson Junior College before leaving to care for her mother. Jan was united in marriage to her lifelong love, Dan Spangler on August 4, 1957, at First Presbyterian Church in Arkansas City. She was a lifetime resident of Arkansas City. Jan’s presence was known throughout the community in many ways. Jan served as a Girl Scout leader from 1958-1964. She was an honorary life member of the USA Presbyterian Women’s Church, served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder, vacation bible schoolteacher, moderator of the Women’s Association, and many other committees throughout her adult life at First Presbyterian Church, and served for many years on the Mission Committee for the Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor. She has been a member of Beta Sigma Phi since 1958 and served as President of the City Council, received the Woman of the Year award, and was crowned the Valentine Queen multiple times. Outside of church and sorority, Jan served as a board member for the Salvation Army and the Red Cross, a chairman of the Junior Red Cross, and instructed first aid classes. She delivered Meals on Wheels, served on Library Friends Committee, bereavement chairman for hospice care. Jan also worked for City Recreation and taught baton and swimming classes and took part in synchronized swimming. Jan organized and chaired the “No Room at the Inn” – a nativity show that she was very proud of. A few awards she won throughout her life were the Traveler’s Good Guy Award, Shimmering Light Award, and Corner Bank’s Community Service Award. When she wasn’t serving her community, she and her husband enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling in their RV to all but 8 states and across part of Canada. Jan and her daughter also traveled to Europe with Mid-America Band & Choir. Jan was a firm believer in family, faith, and community and did all that she could to help others. Jan took great pride in making phone calls and sending cards acknowledging and supporting people throughout the community and delivering baked cookies/brownies to our First Responders as a simple thank you.
Surviving to honor her memory are her daughter, Denah Spangler of St. Charles, Missouri, her granddaughter, Kiersten Colburn of St. Charles, Missouri, her brother, Jon Siner and his wife Jill, of La Vista, Nebraska, 4 nieces, and 1 nephew, 10 great nieces and nephews, and 17 great-great nieces and nephews.
Jan is preceded in death by her parents and, her beloved husband, Dan.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Dan Spangler Scholarship at Cowley College or the Good Samaritan Fund at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor.
