James "Jim" Edward McDowell

James “Jim” Edward McDowell, 78, of Arkansas City, KS passed away on February 2, 2023.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 A.M. Thursday, February 9, 2023, at the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Arkansas City, KS. Burial will follow at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. A time of visitation has been scheduled for Wednesday, February 8, 2023, from 6-8 P.M. Memorials have been established in Jim’s name with the K&O Gas and Steam Engine Club or the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be left in the care of Shelley Family Funeral Home.

Jim was born on March 13, 1944, to Charles and Marjorie McDowell. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1962 and went on to serve in the United States Army from 1962-1965. He worked as a painter for Cessna and Boeing Aircraft, retiring in October of 2000. On April 15, 1967, Jim married Sherry Annette Rutherford at the First Presbyterian Church of Arkansas City, KS. The couple raised three children. Jim was a member of the K&O Gas and Steam Engine Club, and enjoyed restoring old Maytag washers and Hit and Miss engines.

Jim is survived by his children George (Heidi) McDowell, Monette (Perry) McCune, and Michelle (Phillip) Bruce all of Arkansas City, KS, and a sister Beth Brooks of Maddison, KS, as well as 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild with another on the way. He is preceded by his parents, wife Sherry, grandson Spencer McDowell, brother Charles (Leeroy) McDowell, and sister Donna Horton.
