Cleveland Smith Jr. Obituary

Cleveland (Bud) Smith Jr., 88, of Wichita, KS passed away Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, October 13, 2022 at Highland Cemetery in Winfield. There will be a time of visitation from 11:00 A.M. to Noon prior to services at the Shelley Family Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas Humane Society, donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield – 803 Loomis St. Winfield, KS 67156.

Bud was born on February 17, 1934, in Winfield, KS the son of Grover Cleveland Smith and Emily Francis (Kowing) Smith. He was raised on our 150-year-old homestead farm in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School – where he was very active in Future Farmers of America.  He enjoyed riding his homemade motorized bicycle from the farm to the high school.  He loved using his restored 1937 F-12 International Harvester Farmall to care for his farm. 

After graduating from high school Bud joined the United States Army and served from 1956-1962. He was stationed at the Astoria Pictorial Center in New York City. 

He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Myrna Kay Stone in Wichita, KS on May 12, 1961. Bud worked for 40 years as an electronic technician at Ted Combs Television and Radio Service. Before & during his retirement he spent 20 years working at the many concessions stands at Century II Convention Center in Wichita, sharing stories and enjoying serving the multitude of customers. 
Bud enjoyed researching his family’s history & genealogy and spending time with his grandchildren.  For the past 60 years, Bud was the ‘Neighborhood Dad’ for his Wichita community.  He will be missed by so many neighbors and very good friends.

Bud is survived by his sons Jeffrey Scott Smith (Ruby Ho), and Gregory Lee Smith, grandchildren: Emily Ann Smith (Christine Streid), Alex Russell Smith (Kelsey King), and Bo Tran, sister Priscilla June Thompson, as well as his niece and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
