Charles "Chuck" Batchelor Obituary

Charles “Chuck” Keith Batchelor, 84, formerly of Arkansas City, passed away on Sunday morning, September 6, 2020 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield, KS.

Cremation will take place and private services will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson, Kansas. They will be laid to rest in the same space together.  Shelley Family Funeral Home of Arkansas City is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Keith was born on March 10, 1936 in rural Nickerson, Kansas the son of William McKinelly and Vica N. (Thomas) Batchelor.  He grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas and attended Partridge, KS high school before he joined the military.   He served in the United States Army Reserves from 1954 to 1962.  On March 3, 1958 in Waverly, Washington, he married Ardith “Ardie” Frances Chesterman.  The couple lived in Fort Gordon, Georgia; Camp Mercury, Nevada; Munich, Germany; Redstone Arsenal, Alabama; Yakima, Washington.  The couple made their home in Arkansas City in 1962.    He worked for time for Weinneger Trucking and Day Monument Co.  Chuck was probation and parole officer with the State of Kansas.   He also ran his own locksmith business.  He was also a great teacher and taught classes in criminal justice at Cowley College, Southwestern College and Wichita State University in the 1970s.  He was a member of the National Council of Crime and Delinquency and the assistant director of the Civil Defense locally.  His late wife, Ardith wrote poetry and 2 of her favorites are published online at www.shelleyfamilyfh.com.  Chuck enjoyed reading and fishing and was a member of the Crescent Masonic Lodge #133 of Arkansas City, VFW and American Legion.   

His family includes: his aunt, Helen Shewmaker of Mercer Island, WA and several cousins as well as close special friends, Sandy Day and Dr. Brett House and wife Janette of Arkansas City.    He was preceded death by his parents, wife, Ardith in 2016 and infant siblings, George Samuel and Mary Jean.
