Betty Louise Shurts, 85, of Arkansas City, KS passed away at Presbyterian Manor on Monday, June 22, 2020.

A memorial service will be held at the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Arkansas City on Saturday, July 25 at 10 A.M. A private family burial will follow immediately after the service. Betty was born on the family farm in rural Lyon County on August 21, 1934 to loving parents Ray and Mildred (Elliott) Beyer. She married Elwin Shurts in 1959 in Miami, OK. They moved to Camp Grove, IL and then to Henry, IL where Betty worked for the school system as a bus driver for over 30 years. They moved to Arkansas City, KS in 1995. Betty was always on the go, enjoying her family and friends. She bowled in a local bowling league in Henry for many years, was an avid bridge player and loved card games of all kinds. She also enjoyed crocheting, cooking, making jams and jellies and reading. She dearly loved her iris garden and knew each variety by name. Betty was a fun-loving, warm-hearted, generous person who loved to visit. She always kept in touch with her extended family, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends from Illinois and Kansas. Wherever they lived, moved to or were stationed at in the services, Betty was a letter writer. She sent handwritten letters and cards for every occasion hoping to keep everyone up-to-date on family happenings. Betty enjoyed all holidays. She dressed up for Halloween and went trick-or-treating, never missed the Fourth of July fireworks, and Christmas was spent with family, friends and church. She attended the Methodist Church during her years in Henry, IL and was a member of the Mt. Zion Church in Arkansas City, KS.

Betty is survived by her son Will Shurts and wife Karen of Ponca City, OK; grandsons Aaron Shurts and wife Tiffany of Flower Mound, TX, Justin Shurts and wife Nikki of Ada, MI; great-grandchildren: Nikolai Niederschuh, Jillian and Sydney Shurts and Isabella Shurts, and sisters Elsie Tipton and Violet Beyer, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Elwin Shurts, granddaughter-in-law Katie Shurts and great-granddaughter Alexis Shurts.
